George Mason’s Employee Health and Well-Being program (EHW) is committed to providing occupational and individual health services to George Mason University employees in a convenient and affordable manner. Employee Health & Well-Being started in the spring of 2022 and offers a variety of services and resources to support George Mason faculty and staff in their occupational role and personal health goals. Medical Services
- Hearing Conservation Exams: EHW conducts annual audiometric evaluations for employees whose work requires hearing protection. If you work in a loud environment or know that your work activities require hearing protection, and you are not currently enrolled in Mason’s hearing conservation program please contact safety@gmu.edu or (703) 993-8448 for consultation.
- Respiratory Assessments: EHW conducts respiratory protection medical questionnaires for employees who are required to wear respiratory protection. If your work requires a respirator and you are not currently enrolled in George Mason’s respiratory protection program, please contact safety@gmu.edu or (703) 993-8448 for consultation.
- Animal Handler Allergy Assessments: Employees who work with or around animals and animal housing must participate in an Animal Handler Allergy Assessment to determine if additional personal protective equipment or precautions are necessary to preserve health and safety. If you work with or around animals at George Mason and have not participated in an Animal Handler Allergy Assessment, please contact safety@gmu.edu or (703) 993-8448 for consultation.
- Fitness for Duty Assessments: Some occupations require a routine physical evaluation to perform specific work functions such as working in environments with known chemical or biological exposure risks. If your work requires a fitness for duty assessment you will be contacted by EHW or Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). If you have questions about Fitness for Duty Assessments, please contact ehw@gmu.edu or 703-993-6001.
- Laser Safety Medical Assessments: Personnel who work with Class 3B and 4 lasers and laser systems will be referred by EHW for baseline eye exams upon entry into the program as well as when exiting the program. If you are working with this equipment and are not currently enrolled in the Laser Safety Medical Surveillance program, please contact safety@gmu.edu or (703) 993-8448 for consultation.
- Occupational Vaccines, Titers, & Tests: In accordance with George Mason’s Medical Surveillance Plan, vaccines, titers, and tests are required or strongly recommended. If you have questions about which vaccines are required or recommended for your occupational risk, please contact ehw@gmu.edu or 703-993-6001.
- Needlestick Injury Assessment: Employees who have a needlestick injury in the workplace are seen by either EHW or at the nearest Urgent Care or Emergency Room in order to obtain immediate evaluation and treatment as needed. A list of locations and panel of physicians can also be found here. EHW additionally assesses measures which can be taken to avoid future accidents after incidents are reported. If you experience a needlestick in the workplace, you must complete an Employer’s First Report of Accident Form to initiate an assessment and to receive the support you may need or require.
- George Mason Travel Assessments: Employee Health & Well-Being offers travel consultations to employees traveling for work-related purposes. If you would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us at ehw@gmu.edu or 703-993-6001. We recommend your virtual or in-person visit at least 6-8 weeks before you travel to allow for vaccine planning and sufficient time for any vaccines needed to take effect. Please plan to provide your travel itinerary as well as your vaccination records for the assessment.
Elective Services
- Ergonomic Assessments: If you are concerned about repetitive motion activities or your work area design and impact on your physical health, schedule an in-office assessment or explore ergonomically designed office accessories that can be purchased for work areas. - Elective Vaccines: EHW offers periodic vaccine clinics for common immunizations such as Influenza (Flu), Covid, Shingles, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap), Pneumonia, RSV, Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), and Hepatitis A/B for those employees want to receive vaccine based on their health needs.
Training
- 1st Aid / CPR/AED / Stop the Bleed Training: These in-person trainings provide information on how to administer first aid, provide CPR, operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and control bleeding when someone suffers a serious injury, cut, or gunshot wound. Stop the Bleed Training is often offered in conjunction with Active Threat Training. Register here
- Bloodborne Pathogens: This online training module is required for individuals at occupational risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The training covers risks, handling procedures for human materials, and other potentially infectious materials.

- Opioid Overdose Response & Naloxone: This in-person training provides information on how to respond to an opioid overdose emergency, including the proper administration of Naloxone medication. Register here
